Most of the Christmas home decorations we see in Christmas stores today have evolved from many other cultures. Charles D. Warner wrote about the Christmas holiday season in 1884. He quotes “We have saved out of the past nearly all that was good in it”. There is no doubt that Christmas as we know it today is better than the holidays celebrated in the past. At the mere mention of ivy, mistletoe or holly the visions of the Christmas holidays with all its wonderful memories comes rushing back into our minds. We see visions of snow covered hills, Christmas tree decorations, carolers singing with ringing brass bells and lighted outdoor Christmas decorations, lighting up the night sky. In the winter when most native plants lose their leaves, flowers and fruits, mistletoe, evergreens, holly and ivy are winter wonders for us to admire. No wonder these winter delights were used as decorations to brighten up the cold days of winter.
Christmas Fund needs volunteers, money
The Jackson County Christmas Fund is in need of a helping hand as the campaign begins to raise money, collect toys and do other things to give county families in need a happy holiday.
If individuals were to be polled regarding their most favorite time of the year, probably the most often mentioned holiday would be Christmas. If you asked these same individuals to elaborate on their answer as to why it is the most favorite time of the year you would get a variety of answers. For instance, some of these answers could include their belief system surrounding the holiday, a time of sharing gifts, gathering of family members together, eating of special food, etc.
Christmas celebrations in African nations are characterized by much outdoor activity because the season often occurs during a time when the weather is pleasant. Using palm trees and participating in processions are also characteristic features of activities related to Christmas in many parts of Africa.
Buying Christmas presents on a budget for your loved ones, will require some careful planning. Start by making a list of family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances that you need to buy the gifts for. It is suggested that you begin to make this list early; as early as the beginning of November will be good. Put the names of the people under the category of gifts you want to give. One for those who will get the best gifts (usually family comes here), second for those who will get gifts (friends can be included here) and finally those who will get token gifts (co-workers come in this category).
